On the northeast tip of the island at the end of Industry Bay is the Oldhegg Turtle Sanctuary (daily; EC$10; tel 784/458-3245), which endeavours to save the endangered Hawksbill turtle, distinguished by its pointed bill and sleek shell. In the winter months, baby turtles are collected from the beach soon after they are hatched and released two years later when they are fully capable of looking after themselves and have a vastly increased chance of survival. On the southwest tip of the island near the village of La Pompe is the Athneal Petit Museum (open daily, no set hours; US$2; tel 784/458-3322), dedicated to local hero and whaler Athneal Ollivierre as well as the island's long history of whaling. The tiny, shrine-like collection is full of fascinating whaling artefacts as well as the odd inclusion like signed photos of Clint Eastwood and Tom Cruise, both said to have been inspired by Ollivierre's exploits. The museum also holds various artworks by local professor Sam McDowell, whose home and studio in Page Farm is not far away (by appointment; (tel 784/458-3865), if you can't get enough of it at the museum.
