While Bequia's beaches fulfil every expectation of a Caribbean paradise - with sparkling sands and crystal-clear waters - what makes them unforgettable is their appealing roughness. Expect to find rocky headlands, and dense palm woodland that extends to the edge of the beaches, and an aura of castaway isolation. Although the swimming is fantastic, the sea is not tame, at times unleashing large, wild waves which pound the beach to create a dramatic (though not dangerous) setting. The crown jewel of Bequia's beaches is the stunning Princess Margaret Beach , a few minutes' walk over the Princess Point headland from the end of Belmont Walkway, or a quick jaunt by water taxi from Port Elizabeth. Here, the waves froth onto golden sands and the beautiful sunlight bouncing off the waters is perfectly framed by shady palm fronds and stark rocky outcrops. Swimming, sunbathing and snorkelling along this large horseshoe bay is excellent and the beach is never crowded. It has, however, few facilities, apart from the occasional vendor selling trinkets, beer or soft drinks. To the south of Princess Margaret Beach, and a short walk from Port Elizabeth along the road to the interior, lies the busier Lower Bay , where you'll find another striking beach with more in the way of tourist amenities. Friendship Bay in the southwest is still within easy walking distance and also served by frequent buses. Despite its clutch of hotels and restaurants, this broad sweep of Atlantic shoreline remains unspoiled. The picture-perfect beach is ideal for swimming, snorkelling and diving, and a climb up the steep hillside behind it may afford a rare glimpse of a breaching whale.
