Though separated from St Vincent by a mere nine miles, BEQUIA (pronounced "beck-way"), with its aura of tranquillity and relaxed pace, feels light years away from frantic Kingstown. No visit to St Vincent and the Grenadines is complete without a stop on Bequia's seven square miles, where the beaches are breathtaking and the inhabitants friendly. However, don't be fooled into thinking that there's little here to experience except a laid-back attitude and stunning scenery. Bequia may have these in abundance, but the island also has a rich seafaring history from which time-honoured traditions, such as whaling and boat building, are still practised; it was the island's proximity to the migration path of the humpback whale that made it the most important whaling station in the area during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
