Eating and Drinking
Though there's less choice than along the north and west coasts, the south has its share of good places to eat nonetheless. There are some reliable hotel restaurants near Hewanorra airport, and for snacks, try the beach bars along the Anse de Sables shoreline. If you fancy some western-style fast food, there's a branch of KFC at JQ's Plaza in Vieux Fort. Il Pirata Vieux Fort tel 758/454-6610. Tues-Sun 7am-9.30pm. Dark Italian restaurant that isn't enhanced by a drab beachside setting near to the crumbling remnants of an old dock. The food, though, is a happy contrast; specialities include deep-oven pizza, home-made pastas and a decent fish Milanese. Mirage Beach Resort Laborie Bay, Laborie tel 758/455-9763, fax 455-9237, . Good, local food in a relaxing alfresco restaurant; the waves lap gently just below you as you eat. The Reef Beach Cafe Anse de Sables tel 758/454-3418. Tues-Sat 10am-late. A basic beachside restaurant and bar serving standard fare of beers, burgers, pizza and some West Indian dishes. On weekends during the high season, there's typically a lot of live music and dancing on the beach, with a predominantly young crowd of tourists, windsurfers from Club Mistral , locals and students from a nearby medical school. During the off-season, call to find out if there's anything happening.
