Arrival, Information and Getting Around
Most visitors arrive in St Lucia at Hewanorra International Airport in Vieux Fort, and onward transportation throughout the island is readily available - if somewhat slow - from here. Your first stop should be the tourist office (Mon-Fri 7am-last flight, Sat & Sun 10am-last flight; tel 758/454-6644) just outside the arrival area, where you can pick up brochures and maps and get the lowdown on the latest official taxi rates. There are half a dozen car rental booths at the airport, open daily from 8am until the last flight, which can arrive as late as 10pm. Also on the concourse, and directly outside the arrival area, is a taxi stand. Taxis to Castries from the airport or anywhere in Vieux Fort travel the wide and slick East Coast Highway and turn inland toward the capital at Dennery. The fare to Castries is EC$140 and the 58-kilometre trip takes a bit more than an hour. Vieux Fort to Soufriere is EC$150, and the 42-kilometre ride takes forty minutes to an hour, depending upon your driver's tolerance level for pothole-filled roads. In Vieux Fort, buses to Castries (route 4B) leave from New Dock Road on the south side of the airport, while the stand for west coast buses to Soufriere (route 4A) is also south of the airport at Clarke Street, next to a traffic light and a Shell service station.
