The Diamond Botanical Gardens (Mon-Sat 10am-5pm, Sun 10am-3pm; EC$7; tel 758/459-7565), situated 2km east of Soufriere, are the main attraction at Soufriere Estate, a former sugar plantation dating from 1713 that formed part of a 2000-acre land grant bestowed by Louis IV to the Devaux family. Heavily frequented tours include trips to the gardens themselves, some overly modernized mineral baths , a pleasant nature trail, an ornate waterwheel, old mill and the waterfall . Though you can't swim by the waterfall, you can splash about in the slightly pungent depths of the baths in an outdoor pool or in several smaller tubs inside; the water is cooler than you might expect, but still manages to reach 41º (106ºF) in certain tubs. In addition to the main entry fee to the complex, you'll pay EC$6.50 to use the pool and EC$10 for a private bath. The gardens' lure is somewhat marred by the high volume of tourist traffic, but come very early or in late afternoon and its well worth your time.
