To the immediate north of Soufriere is the popular Anse Chastanet Beach , long, wide and presided over by the resort of the same name. It's one of the island's finest beaches, and a great place for scuba excursions, with several good dive sites nearby and - due to the proximity of the reef to the shore - remarkably good snorkelling right off the beach. Scuba St Lucia is an excellent dive operation by the water, renting snorkelling as well as scuba gear. Anse Chastanet is reachable via a deplorably bad, pothole-filled road, jutting right from the main road just before you enter Soufriere from the north. The two-kilometre track takes about fifteen minutes by car or 45 minutes on foot, or you can catch a water taxi from Soufriere (US$10 one-way).
