Eating and Drinking
The coast road south of Castries hosts a small number of good-value eateries , and Soufriere holds its own against the tourism strongholds of the northwest, with a wealth of eating places ranging from small cafes to more elegant restaurants for relaxed evening dining. Some of the hotels also offer wide-ranging evening menus and comfortable beachside restaurants for lunching during the day. Captain Hook's Castries Road, Soufriere tel 758/459-7365. Tiny, with plastic outdoor tables and a less than inspired interior, this very local joint at the southern end of Soufriere serves great prix-fixe seafood dinners for EC$40 and huge portions of delicious fish or chicken and chips for EC$25. Dasheene Ladera Resort , Soufriere tel 758/459-7323. Daily 8-10am, 11am-2.30pm & 6.30pm-late. An eclectic mix of West Indian, oriental, Italian and vegetarian cuisine, the majority of it traditional but artful. Dinner is expensive, and usually delicious, but the buffets can be mediocre and lunch hit-and-miss. The views of the Pitons and bay below are astonishing - come up for drinks before sunset. JJ's Marigot Bay Road tel 758/451-4076. On the road to the bay, JJ's runs a popular seafood night on Wednesday, with dancing to all sorts of music afterward, and a popular Saturday night BBQ. It used to be much rowdier here in the past, but complaints from bay residents have led to a toning down of the entertainment here: a godsend if you are trying to sleep at 3am. La Haut Plantation Soufriere tel 758/459-7008. Great, friendly service and excellent fresh seafood make this charming poolside restaurant just south of Soufriere a great place to stop for lunch or evening cocktails - the view of the Pitons is perfect. La Mirage 14 Church St, Soufriere tel 758/459-7010. Mon-Sat lunch & dinner. An informal, local ground-floor restaurant serving vegetarian specialities such as pasta and creative salads, as well as fish and chips, roasted chicken and pizza, all of which are substantial and sensibly priced. Old Courthouse Restaurant Soufriere waterfront tel 758/459-5002. Daily 8am-midnight. This bright lavender-painted building just north of the fish market building is indeed an old courthouse, dating back to 1898 - the thick-doored bathrooms were the former cells. The moderately priced cuisine - West Indian with Asian twists - is solid and recommendable, but with just nine tables, five overlooking the water, reservations are essential. The Shack Marigot Bay tel 758/451-4145. Daily lunch & dinner. Cheap, filling and tasty American-style fare (think burgers, salads and sandwiches) with a Caribbean twist - the Kingfish burger is excellent - and plentiful seafood in a lovely floating cafe-restaurant on the bay. Happy hour is 5-7pm; come for the sunset.
