Occupying the northern section of Praslin Bay some 10km north of Micoud is the Fregate Islands Nature Reserve (daily Aug-April 9am-5pm, tours only). The reserve is centred around the two tiny cays just metres offshore and named for the seagoing frigate bird that nests here between May and July, when the reserve is completely off limits. Glossy jet-black birds with forked tail feathers, male frigates have distinctive red or bright orange throat pouches which are expanded during mating time to attract females. As you're not allowed onto the islands themselves, the reserve is best explored on the mainland section via an easy, 1.5km walking trail that loops through a changing scenery of thick vegetation to dry spots of low-lying bushes and cacti, passing a waterfall that flows in the rainy season, a mangrove swamp and an observation point overlooking the Fregate Islands before returning to base. The reserve is marked by a sign in front of a small car park on the ocean side of the highway; however, when you get there, you'll probably find the entrance gated and locked. The Fregates are maintained by the St Lucia National Trust (tel 758/452-5005 or 453-1495, ), and no one is allowed in without one of their authorized guides, who will conduct tours for groups of two or more; these are best booked in advance and cost EC$55 per person. A pleasant alternative - or addition - to touring the reserves is the Eastern Nature Trail (same contact details; US$12), a pleasant two-mile guided stroll along the Atlantic Coast. Again, call and book in advance.
