Castries Around Castries

Around Castries

Big Chef Steakhouse Rodney Bay Marina tel 758/450-0210, Mon-Sat from 6pm. Popular local TV chef caters for those who like their meal meaty. From an 8oz tenderloin to "as big as you can handle", these meats are not for the faint at heart - or the gourmet. Pasta and seafood is available, if you must.

Bon Appetit Morne Road, Morne Fortune tel 758/452-2757. Mon-Fri 11am-2pm & 6.30-9.30pm, Sat & Sun 6.30-9.30pm. Reservations are essential at this popular, rather expensive five-table restaurant in the Castries hills. House specialities are steaks and seafood, the cuisine is international and French nouveau - smallish servings tastefully arranged and embellished with minimal amounts of heavy sauces - and the wine selection is as impressive as the views of the harbour below.

Coal Pot Vigie Marina, Vigie tel 758/452-5566. Mon-Fri lunch & dinner, Sat dinner. One of the island's busiest and best restaurants - dinner reservations are essential. The New World cuisine is French-influenced, decorative and pricey, but the seafood is fresh and the salads are recommended. Directly on the water's edge, the dark interior is embellished with local artwork; this is a perfect place for a special night out.

Froggie Jack's Vigie Marina, Vigie tel 758/458-1900. Daily lunch & dinner. A warm, personal bar and restaurant that's big on excellent food and small on overdressed pomp. The restaurant sits above the marina, and the fare is prepared to order by an experienced Frenchman, and emphasis is on seafood and home-smoked meats.

Green Parrot The Morne tel 758/452-3399 or 3167. Daily 7am-late. Irascible chef Harry Edwards trained at the illustrious Claridge's hotel in London, but now he's content with presiding over Wednesday and Saturday night floorshows and cooking up creole, West Indian and international food with flair. Great seafood and views down onto Castries Harbour. Ladies wearing flowers in their

hair, accompanied by well-dressed gents, eat for free on Mondays; otherwise the prix-fixe (call for days) is EC$90 and the restaurant will pay round-trip taxi fares for groups of four or more, or the one-way fare for parties of two.

The Wharf Castries-Gros Islet Highway, Choc Bay tel 758/450-4844. Daily 9am-midnight. This beachside restaurant lays on occasional live music - look out for family nights and other theme evenings, as well as the regular Tuesday night karaoke songfest.
