Castries
Castries Central Market Jeremie Street tel 758/453-6580. Daily 6am-5pm. Market vendors, shoppers and local business people flock to eat breakfast or lunch at these dozen or so restaurant stalls in a small, crowded alleyway behind the market. Taken at unadorned plastic tables, the servings of seafood, rotis, rice and beans or meat and dumplings are hearty and delicious. Most stalls don't accept credit cards. The Monkey Tree Cafe Corner of Cadet and Jeremie streets tel 758/451-3004. Mon-Fri 7am-5pm, Sat 7am-3pm, Sun cruise ship days only. Feels like a mini-canteen but serves better food: local dishes, plated salads and the unusual 'hot plate cooking' system, where you choose a little from a variety of main and side dishes, thereby designing your own meal. Cheap and filling, at least.
