St Kitts' only beach resort area, FRIGATE BAY is three miles southeast of the capital, on flatlands sandwiched by the Atlantic and Caribbean Sea. On the Atlantic side lies North Frigate Bay beach, a deep golden band fronting unswimmable waters thanks to a strong undertow. The narrow South Frigate Bay (also known as Timothy Beach), on the calmer Caribbean side, has a watersports shack with snorkelling gear, windsurfers and kayaks; staff also organize three-hour snorkelling trips to nearby reefs and shipwrecks (US$25). Between the two beaches is St Kitts' expansive, 27-hole golf course , and a casino . Despite the dearth of beachfront in the immediate vicinity, Frigate Bay is currently the focus of major expansion efforts; the sprawling 1000-room Royal St Kitts (tel 869/465-1290 or 1-888/217-5645), which opened in late 2002, ranks as the Eastern Caribbean's biggest resort.
