Inundated with sugarcane, gorged with wild bougainvillaea and hibiscus, and sprinkled with overgrown windmills, tiny NEVIS ' rural beauty and backwater charm make it unique in the Caribbean, and are the keys to its appeal. Most of the sightseeing consists of poking around the enchanting capital, Charlestown , where well-preserved skirt-and-blouse houses and a couple of excellent history museums provide an easy afternoon's distraction. Outside the capital, you're left to wander about the odd country church, go horse riding in the hinterlands, hike up Mount Nevis , explore unspoiled dive sites off the coast, or - as many visitors do - spend most of your time on one of the four white-sand beaches. The island is small enough that it can be experienced on a day trip from St Kitts - a good option if you're watching your budget, as Nevis is a good deal pricier
