Travelling To The Offshore Islands
The Spanish Virgins are easily reached by plane from San Juan or the port city of Fajardo on the eastern coast, via Vieques Air Link (tel 1-888/901-9247) or Isla Nena (tel 1-888/263-6213). Flights from San Juan leave for Vieques from the international airport (US$69 one-way) and to both islands from Isla Grande airport, which is somewhat cheaper (US$43 one-way to Vieques; US$50 to Culebra). Flights are much cheaper from Fajardo, within an hour's drive from San Juan (US$19 one-way to Vieques; US$25 one-way to Culebra). Either flight takes just around a half-hour. The Puerto Rican Port Authority (tel 1-800/981-2005 or 787/863-0705 in Fajardo; tel 787/741-4761 in Vieques; tel 787/742-3161 in Culebra) also runs ferries to the Spanish Virgins. The trip takes about an hour and is dirt-cheap: US$2 to Vieques and US$2.25 to Culebra. You may even bring your car aboard, but you have to reserve a space at least two weeks in advance. Call for schedules and to make reservations.
