Not to be confused with the town by the same name, twelve miles away, the Cabo Rojo Peninsula culminates in a red-hued limestone promontory , also known as Punta Jaguey, which extends into the Caribbean at the island's southwest tip. A fifteen-minute hike to the Faro de Cabo Rojo (lighthouse), built in 1881, affords one of Puerto Rico's most dazzling vistas - a three-sided view of the Caribbean from a jagged cliff, with raptors circling overhead and red boulders below rising like stalagmites from the crashing turquoise surf. Several desolate, white-sand coves are visible from the top, and you can further reward your efforts by hiking to one of them and spending the afternoon there undisturbed by other humans. The drive here on Highway 301 is also remarkable, past salt flats, mangrove swamps and gnarled trees. From La Parguera, drive west on highways 304, 305 and 303 to 301 south. Follow 301 until the road ends; the huge white mountains are salt piles awaiting shipment owned by Las Salinas de Cabo Rojo. When the road becomes unpassable, park and begin to hike up the cliffs to the lighthouse. The walk is only mildly challenging - and profoundly rewarding, but note that this area can be desolate and is best avoided by women travelling alone
