Set on a peninsula straddling the Atlantic and the Laguna Condado, CONADO was built in the 1950s as the island's first resort area, and after a decline in the 1980s it has again bloomed in popularity. Today its wide, tiled sidewalks lined with palms, fancy boutiques, trendy restaurants and high-rise resort hotels and casinos make it San Juan's slickest neighbourhood. Next to Old San Juan, it's the best area to explore on foot, particularly the main drag, Avenida Ashford . Just a block from Avenida Ashford is two-mile Condado Beach , the best stretch of sand in town, though far from the best on the island. It's certainly the most accessible beach for the great number of tourists who stay in the luxury hotels here, and its smooth sand and good swimming make it pleasant enough. There are lots of watersports available, and plenty of outdoor bars and restaurants are to be found on the beach itself, or within walking distance. Condado also has the city's liveliest nightlife . Many of the top dance clubs are here, and some of the hotels book fantastic live salsa. Gay travellers will also find the area to be very gay-friendly.
