Just east of the San Juan city limits on Highway 187, Pinones State Forest is where locals go to let loose on weekends, when a winding road along five miles of wild beaches becomes the site of an ongoing party, and roadside kiosks sell the likes of raw oysters, seasoned pork and coco frio . At any time, you can also take advantage of an excellent bike path along the shore and good surfing . Festivities and activities aside, the forest, thick with almond and palm groves, is an important wildlife refuge , home to more than 45 bird species, including pelicans and several types of heron, and sheltering the island's largest mangrove lagoon. A few words of caution: keep an eye out for yourself and your vehicle (thefts are common), and don't eat anything raw, particularly the oysters
