Anchored around an almost perfectly square harbour, POINTE-DU-BOUT gets most of its traffic from upper-class French hedonists with money to burn; the costs of staying in this ersatz area - even the beaches are artificial - are the highest on Martinique. Still, the polished veneer may appeal to some, especially those in need of a good urban fix after staying in a less-equipped community further south along the coast. You can always escape the scene with Lychee Plongee (tel 0596/66 05 26 fax 66 14 98, lycheeplongee@wanadoo.fr ?45.74), a diving outfit on the Pointe's outskirts that hits the grottoes around the Rocher du Diamant.
