Despite boasting some of Martinique's top beaches, the twelve-kilometre long PRESQU'ILE CARAVELLE has remained delightfully underdeveloped. Sweeps of sugarcane and bamboo crush up against the access road before opening onto dramatic ocean vistas and arriving at the peninsula's solitary village, quaint Tartane , where a glorious Atlantic-facing beach is busy with fishing boats and red-throated pelicans angling for dinner. Aside from Anse Tartane, there are five other Atlantic-facing beaches nearby, the best of which, Anse l'Etang , is 1km east of town. Double that distance is windswept Anse Bonneville , with prime windsurfing conditions. The peninsula's other draw, the protected nature reserve at its tip, has several hiking trails and contains what's left of the 1740 Chateau Dubuc (daily 8am-6pm; ?2.29), a homestead with ruins of several slave cachots , small solitary-confinement units. A couple of sights within easy driving distance combine to make a good half-day outing. The vicinity of Ste-Marie finds the engaging Musee du Rhum (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm, Sat 9am-1pm; free entry and tasting), where a mint collection of rum-related paraphernalia is complemented by hilariously outdated advertising campaigns. The area's main attraction, however, is the stellar Habitation Clement , 10km south of the peninsula, at the western outskirts of Le Francois (daily 9am-6pm; closed Sept; ?7, rum-tasting included; ). The graceful property sits on eighteen hectares of grounds but the highlight is its unusual anti-Christopher Columbus exhibit in the rum-ageing room.
