The coast road west of Ocho Rios swings past a couple of engaging attractions. Some eight miles west of town is the former site of Seville, Jamaica's first Spanish settlement, now an overgrown wasteland dotted with the crumbling remains of once-impressive buildings. The best way to see it is on horseback; we've listed details of the rides offered by Hooves. Across the road is Seville Great House and Heritage Park (Tues-Sat 9am-5pm, 45min tours; J$150), one of the few sites on the island focusing on the lives, customs and culture of Tainos and Africans. There's more equine action at Chukka Cove , the most prestigious equestrian facility and polo ground in Jamaica - matches are open to observers most weekends; call for schedules (tel 876/972-2506). The immaculate stables also offer fabulous three-hour beach rides as part of their roster of excursions. A mile or so past Chukka Cove, a tiny paved road cuts inland toward the signposted Cranbrook Flower Forest (daily 9am-5pm; US$10 tel 876/770-8071), an exquisitely landscaped, 130-acre nature park with several grassy lawns, a fishing pond where you can catch your lunch and have it cooked for you, and a swift-running river with plenty of marvellous swimming spots. It's the perfect place for a picnic: bring your own or buy it on site.
