Terrific beaches and attractive architecture make tiny TERRE-DE-HAUT the most striking of Guadeloupe's outer islands. Since its dry climate prevented the introduction of sugarcane, it was instead settled by white Breton and Poitevin fishermen whose ancestors are today touted as the Antilles' best - their unique fishing boats, light and rapid wooden outboards called Saintoises , are famous in the trade. Measuring a mere 5km from end to end, the craggy spit is capped by the 309- metre Chameau and anchored by a darling village simply called Le Bourg - The Town - which borders the Baie des Saintes , a glorious harbour enclosed by hilly outcroppings.
