Guadeloupe's four OFFSHORE ISLANDS make for delightful day or overnight trips from the mainland. The closest, Mediterranean-like Terre-de-Haut , is one of two inhabited islands that form Les Saintes . Its much drier and rockier sibling, Terre-de-Bas , makes a good escape from the crowds next door. Further out lies Marie-Galante , a laid-back island with graceful beaches that are only starting to get touristy. In the far distance, sparsely populated La Desirade looms like a capsized rowboat, its shores so undeveloped that visitors may feel like castaways.
