The easiest way to reach the Lesser Antilles' highest peak, the 1467-metre LA SOUFRIERE , is by heading north on Basse-Terre's main north-south artery, avenue du General Felix-Eboue. North of town, it changes to the D11 and cuts a steep path to St-Claude - the last place en-route for water and food supplies. You'll need good walking shoes to make the 1.5hr ascent to La Soufriere's often cloud-covered summit, as the path that winds up its western flank gets rockier, tighter and more slippery as it nears the top. The trailhead starts about 8km past St-Claude, at Savane a Mulets , a car park at an elevation of 1142m. You'll pass deep gorges and panoramic vistas of the surrounding countryside before arriving on a moonscape plateau of boiling sulphuric cauldrons. Though you're officially not allowed to hike to the very top nowadays, most people ignore the sign and continue the ascent at their own risk. The adventurous can commit to a four-hour hike from Savane a Mulets to the Chutes du Carbet.
