Southern Basse-Terre is significantly more developed than the north, with sizeable coastal towns merging into one other along the N2, culminating with Guadeloupe's capital, also named Basse-Terre . Dominated by the island's highest point, the sulphuric La Soufriere , the region's other draws are the Chutes de Carbet waterfalls and the abundant underwater marine life around Ilets Pigeon .
