Undulating with mountain ranges, gushing with waterfalls and packed with rainforests, BASSE-TERRE provides a rugged antidote to Grande-Terre's glossy resorts. Scenic hikes in the inland Parc National de la Guadeloupe descend to the base of the Chutes de Carbet and ascend the slopes of La Soufriere . Outlying beaches , ranging from golden pockets like Grande Anse to sparkling black stretches like Plage Malendure , extend underwater to one of the world's top dive sites. Despite everything it has to offer, Basse-Terre is bereft of resort centres; instead you'll find bungalows and small hotels. Even if Grande-Terre is your base, you should still make time for a day trip here. You can easily explore some of the rainforest in the morning, hit Grande Anse for lunch and go diving in the afternoon
