Samana's best attribute is its convenience as an inexpensive base from which to explore some of the peninsula's more compelling sights. Ferries leave three times daily to nearby CAYO LEVANTADO , the original Bacardi Island photographed in the 1970s rum campaign. Although it's undisputedly beautiful, the huge tourist infrastructure that's been set up around it somewhat destroys its desert island charm and unless you're visiting as part of a whale-watching tour, there are better places on the peninsula to spend a day on the beach. Along the eastern tip of the peninsula, and easily reachable by guagua , a series of attractive beaches lead toward Las Galeras , as pretty a spot as any along the coast, and the even better beach at Playa Rincon .
