Park Practicalities
Trail maps are available (EC$0.50-1) at the Forestry Division offices in Roseau's Botanical Gardens (tel 767/448-2401, ext 417). Of all the treks, only those for Boiling Lake and parts of Trafalgar Falls definitely require a guide ; conveniently, all of Dominica's guesthouses can arrange one as part of your package. Otherwise, unaffiliated guides charge EC$20-50 depending on the hike's length and difficulty. You'll find these guides hanging out at the trailheads, where park fees must be paid (individual hikes EC$2, day-pass EC$5, multiple weeklong access EC$10). All of the trails can be done in a day: the longest, the hike to Boiling Lake, is a seven-hour round-trip affair. In all cases, bring sturdy shoes and raingear; for longer hikes, make sure you have enough water and food.
