Opening Hours, Public Holidays and Festivals
Generally, opening hours are Monday to Friday 8am-1pm and 2-4pm. Banks tend to keep shorter hours (Mon-Thurs 8am-3pm, Fri until 5pm). Shops and services close altogether on Sunday, when the only things open are hotel restaurants. In addition to closures on holidays , Dominica often shuts down during lively festivals, the biggest of which, Carnival , takes place during the last two weeks of Lent, with calypso performances, costumed street dancing to lapo kabwit (goat-skin drum) bands, beauty pageants and such. The first week of June is the Dive Fest , with waterfront parties and cruises, while October showcases the three-day Creole Music Festival , a jamboree of Caribbean rock, African soukous and Louisiana zydeco. One of the biggest parties around happens the week prior to Independence Day (Nov 3), with colourful celebrations and traditional creole food and music.
