Hiking The Brac
The hiking trails are fairly easy to navigate on your own - and the longest is about three hours round-trip - though you can also request a free guide from the Brac Department of Tourism (tel 345/948-1849) covering wildlife and local history. At the least, you can get hiking maps from the DOT, or from many hotels. Sturdy shoes are essential as many trails weave through sections of sharp ironshore; carry some water and consider a light long-sleeve shirt to reduce scratches from twigs. The caves all have easy accessible entryways, no spelunking required; just walk right in. Be aware that there will be bats dangling from the ceiling; bring a small penlight if you want a better glimpse. Avoid hiking at sunset as the mosquitoes are at their peak.
