The North Sound in particular offers excellent watersports opportunities - the companies below are recommended. Many outfits operating out of Tortola also provide watersports for travellers on Virgin Gorda.

Bitter End Yacht Club tel 284/494-2746. The club offers equipment rentals, lessons and charters: kayaks, Lasers, Hobies, Rhodes19s, J24s and Freedom 30s. Also located here is the Nick Trotter Sailing School (tel 284/494-2745).

Dive BVI tel 284/495-5513, . This dive shop in Leverick Bay (with a branch at Yacht Harbour) has been in business since 1975 and offers rentals, sales, dive trips and five-star PADI training. Trips hit all the hot spots - a two-tanker is US$85. Beach and snorkel trips to Anegada depart twice daily.

Kilbrides Sunchaser Scuba tel 284/495-9638. Located at the Bitter End , this is the most established dive outfit in the BVI and Kilbride is a legend in the area. Daily trips include The Dogs, Salt, Ginger and Cooper islands as private charters or groups. Lessons range from beginner to dive-master.

Leverick Bay Watersports tel 284/495-7376. You can rent boats ranging from ten-foot dinghies to a 28-foot Parrotfish powerboat here. They also rent out small sailboats, kayaks and offer water-skiing, wake boarding and parasailing.

North Sound Watersports For boat charters, day trips and deep-sea fishing. Glass-bottom boat reef tours cost US$20 per hour and jet ski rentals US$70 an hour.

284/495-7044. Half-, full- and multi-day trips for sightseers and snorkellers. Prices range from US$35 per person for sunset boat trips up to US$600 for full-day private charter for up to eight people.

Spirit of Anegada tel 284/495-5937. Book a day of sailing and snorkelling aboard this old-fashioned 44-foot gaff schooner with its wooden helm and authentic details. Group charters for a full day are US$85 per person, while a full-day private charter for up to six people costs US$550.
