Arrival, Information and Getting Around
Virgin Gorda's airport is just over a mile east of Spanish Town, but most people fly to Tortola's Beef Island Airport and take a ferry. Taxis are there to meet flights or you can call Mahogany Rentals and Taxi Service (tel 284/495-5469) and Andy's Taxi & Jeep Rental (tel 284/495-5511). A taxi from the airport to Gun Creek will cost about US$20, and from the airport to Spanish Town about US$5. Maps and brochures are available from Virgin Gorda's BVI Tourist Board office (tel 284/495-5181) at Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour in Spanish Town. The post office is in Spanish Town, on the road south of the yacht harbour (tel 284/495-5224). You won't really need a car on Virgin Gorda - boats are generally the fastest, cheapest and most scenic way to get around. The North Sound Express ferry makes stops between Trellis Bay on Tortola, and Yacht Harbour, Leverick Bay and The Bitter End Yacht Club on Virgin Gorda. For most other journeys you'll be able to hitch a ride on the ferries that most resorts provide for their employees, or catch one of the free ferries that run between The Bitter End and Gun Creek and between Saba Rock and The Sand Box on Prickly Pear Island and anywhere in the North Sound. Call ahead to schedule a pick-up. Other options include private water taxis , renting your own powerboat, which can be pricey, or simply using the 11ft Boston Whalers that most resorts provide free for their guests. When operating your own boat, make sure to inquire about a map of underwater reefs. The two main taxi firms , Mahogany and Andy's, both provide special tours. If you find the need for a car , rental companies are Island Style Jeep & Car Rental (tel 284/495-6300) and L&S Jeep Rental (tel 284/495-5297).
