Arrival, Information and Getting Around
From Beef Island International Airport it's a short hop across the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge to East End on Tortola. Taxis cost US$12-15 for the six miles to Road Town; US$20-25 for destinations in West End. Local regulations prevent car rental agencies from having offices at the airport but some offer a free pick-up and drop-off service. The inter-island ferries dock at either West End or Road Town. Banks, information and post offices are all found in Road Town, though you will be able to get hold of maps at the airport and most hotels. Some hotels and resorts offer free internet access to guests; otherwise, the best deals are at CaribWave Internet Cafe, Waterfront Drive, Road Town (tel 284/494-7549; US$8 for 15min, US$12 for 30min or US$20 for an hour) and Cyber Cafe, Trellis Bay (tel 284/495-2447). Public transport is limited to Scato's bus service - a fleet of pick-up trucks running to no particular schedule and no particular stops, you just flag them down as they approach. Taxis are easy to come by unless there's several cruise ships in town. There are stands at the ferry docks in Road Town and West End (look out for the brightly coloured stands with men chatting and playing checkers). If you need to arrange for one ahead of time, try BVI Taxi Association (tel 284/494-7519); Wickham's Cay (tel 284/494-2322); and Beef Island Taxi Association (tel 284/495-1982). Car rental companies on the island include Dede's Car Rental, Fat Hog's Bay (tel 284/495-2041); Del's Jeep & Car Rental, Cane Garden Bay (tel 284/495-9356); Dollar Rent-a-Car, Prospect Reef and Long Bay Beach (tel 284/494-6093); Hertz, West End (tel 284/495-4405); ITGO Car Rental, Wickham's Cay (tel 284/494-5150); and Tola Car Rentals, Fish Bay (tel 284/494-8652). If you'd rather be out on the water, you can hire a small dinghy or even a large powerboat to get around - prices range between US$50-300 per day.
