The road through the area of Sandy Lane Bay is overhung with lush vegetation and reeks of wealth. In Barbados, the name Sandy Lane is synonymous with the grandest of the island's hotels, whose list of repeat celebrity guests is impressive. The place guards its guests jealously behind high walls and security guards. Nevertheless, as part of its deal with the government to get permission for the hotel (and the re-routing of the coastal road that it involved), the owners promised to provide a ten-metre right of way to the south of the property, giving public access to the shore. Today that access is still there and, if you've got the energy, you can wander down to the bay past the tall casuarinas and manchineel trees. The sweep of gently shelving sand, backed by the elegant hotel (completely rebuilt by its new Irish owners between 1998 and 2001), is magnificent.
