Five minutes' northeast of Bridgetown's city centre, the exquisite little house at Tyrol Cot (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm; B$11.50) was the launch pad for two of the island's most illustrious political careers. From 1929 it served as the home of Sir Grantley Adams, the first elected leader of pre-independence Barbados, and it was the birthplace of his son, Tom Adams, the nation's prime minister from 1976 until his death in 1985. The building itself has some unusual architectural features, while the family's memorabilia is scattered about. Outside the house, a tiny heritage village has been built, featuring half a dozen old-fashioned chattel houses built to various designs; several showcase traditional handicrafts, with local artists selling (and occasionally demonstrating) their crafts, and there's a typical rum-shop where you can get a drink and a bite to eat.
