The centre of the Garrison area is the savannah , a huge grassy space that served as the army's parade ground. The military buildings - barracks, quartermaster's store and hospitals, as well as the fort itself - stand in a rough square around its outer edges, flanked by coconut palms and large mango trees. The savannah is still active, with sports grounds and play areas bounded by the city's race track . To the south, you can still see the thick eighteenth-century walls of St Ann's Fort (now used by the Barbadian defence force and closed to visitors) while, just north of here, the spectacular Main Guard - with its tall, bright-red tower and green cupola - is the area's most striking construction. This was the guardhouse, built in 1803, where court-martials and subsequent punishments were carried out; you're normally free to wander around the building, though there's little to see. Outside, ranks of cannons point menacingly across the savannah towards some superbly restored barrack buildings , which now serve as government offices.
