Housed in the Garrison's old military prison on the east side of the savannah, the Barbados Museum (Mon-Sat 9am-5pm, Sun 2-6pm; B$11.50) is a treat. A series of galleries run clockwise around an airy central courtyard that once rang with the sound of prisoners breaking stones. Don't try to rush through - the place is stuffed with interesting and informative exhibits on the island's history, culture, flora and fauna, and also showcases prints and paintings of old Barbados, African crafts , and decorative arts from around the world. Period rooms show what a typical bedroom, living-room and dining room would have looked like in one of the plantation houses. If you need a break, head for the on-site cafe . Twice a week the courtyard is also the venue for 1627 and All That , an evening of dance and story-telling. Directly across the Garrison savannah, the tiny Barbados Gallery of Art (Tues-Sat 10am-5pm; B$5), is devoted to the art of the island and the wider Caribbean as well. Around three hundred paintings, prints and sculptures form the permanent collection and there are periodic exhibitions of local and international art .
