From Martin's Bay, a steep road climbs dramatically up through Hackleton's Cliff. Turn left at the top of the hill, past more sweeping fields of sugarcane, for the Gothic St John's Parish Church (daily 9am-5pm; free), probably the most elegant of the island's churches. Like many of the parish churches, St John's - typically English with its arched doors and windows and graceful tower - was first built in the mid-seventeenth century but, following severe hurricane damage in the great storm of 1831, now dates from around 1836. The floor of the church is paved with ancient memorial tablets, rescued from earlier versions of the building, and a Madonna and Child sculpture by Richard Westmacott stands to the left of the main entrance. Most attractive of all is the reddish-brown pulpit, superbly hand-carved from four local woods and imported oak and pine. Outside, the expansive graveyard is perched on top of the cliff, looking down over miles of jagged coastline and crammed with moss-covered tombs, family vaults and a wide array of tropical flora
