Arrival and Information
George Town International Airport is located eight miles north of town, and receives two daily flights from Nassau, in the early morning and late afternoon, while American Eagle flies from Miami daily at noon. Long Island's Stella Maris Resort provides direct, one-way flights from George Town for its guests (US$100; tel 242/338-2050), and charges US$450 to charter the entire five-seat plane. Unless you're arriving by private yacht, your port of entry will likely be George Town or Staniel Cay, with ferries and mail boats arriving at the government dock in the centre of George Town, within walking distance of most hotels. The Sealink ferry (tel 242/323-2166) leaves Nassau on Tuesdays at 2am, arriving at 12.45pm, and departs George Town at 6pm, returning 4am Wednesday morning. The well-maintained Grand Master mail boat (US$40 one-way; tel 242/393-1064) departs Nassau on Tuesdays at 2pm, arriving in George Town early Wednesday morning, and depending on tides and cargo, returns Wednesday night or Thursday morning, arriving in Nassau twelve hours later. Located in the centre of George Town above Thompson's Car Rental, the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism provides useful information (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm; tel 242/336-2440, fax 336-2431) and a wide selection of maps , brochures and magazines.
