East of Kas- Demre Myra and Andriake

A winding 45-minute drive beyond Kas lies the river delta town of DEMRE (officially Kale ), a rather scruffy citrus- and tomato-growing town afforded more attention by tour parties than it can really deal with. However, it is worth visiting for its Church of St Nicholas (daily 9am-7pm; $5) on Muze Caddesi. The saint's sarcophagus, left of the entrance, is not considered the genuine article, after relic hunters stole some of the saint's bones from the real one, which allegedly now lies under the floor (the bones are at last due to be sent back from Italy). The remains of the ancient Lycian city of Myra (daily 9am-7pm; $1), 2km north of the centre, make up one of the most beautiful Lycian sites, consisting mainly of a large theatre and some of the best examples of house-style rock tombs to be seen in Lycia. And the site of the ancient city's port, Andriake , now known as Cayagzi, 2km west of Demre, is also worth a visit, itself close to a minimally developed sandy beach ; however, there are no minibuses, so you'll need to get a taxi. The substantial remains of the so-called Hadrian's granary are the most prominent feature of the site, built between 119 and 139 AD by the Emperor Hadrian and consisting of eight rooms constructed of well-fitting blocks, the outer walls still

standing to their original height on the far bank of the stream running parallel to the road to the beach. Above the main gate are busts of Hadrian and a woman who is thought to be the Empress Sabina.

It's best to treat Demre as a day-trip from Kas, as decent pensions are few and far between. Best is the family-run Kent (tel 0242/871 2042; under GBP5/$8), 2km north of the centre on the road to Myra. The closest campsite is the Ocakbasi , at Andriake.
