Just off the main highway, 5km east of Nong Khai and served by frequent songthaews, SALA KAEO KOU (aka Wat Khaek; daily 7am-5pm; B30) is best known for its bizarre sculpture garden, which looks like the work of a giant artist on acid. The temple was founded by the unconventional and charismatic Thai holy man, Luang Phu Boonlua Surirat, who died in 1996. The garden bristles with Buddhist, Hindu and secular figures, all executed in concrete with imaginative abandon by unskilled followers under Luang Phu's direction. The religious statues, in particular, are radically modern while others illustrate Thai proverbs. Luang Phu established a similarly weird "Buddha Park" (Xiang Khouan) across the Mekong near Vientiane in Laos.
