Built during the same period as Phimai, the temple complexes of Prasat Hin Khao Phanom Rung and Prasat Muang Tham form two more links in the chain that once connected the Khmer capital with the limits of its empire. To get to the ruins, you first need to take a bus to the small town of Ban Tako , roughly midway between Khorat and Surin on Route 24; bus #274 travels between the two provincial capitals. From Ban Tako it's 12km south to Phanom Rung and another 8km south to Muang Tham so you'll either have to hitch or rent a motorbike taxi (B60-80 per person to Phanom Rung, plus B50 for the return trip to Muang Tham, plus another B60-80 to Ban Tako). Most people do the ruins as a day-trip from Khorat or Surin, but there's a simple guesthouse, Honey Inn (under $5) in Prakhon Chai, the town closest to Phanom Rung on the eastern stretch of Route 24, between Ban Tako and Surin.
