The major border town in these parts is NONG KHAI , the terminus of the rail line from Bangkok and the easiest place for overland travel to Laos, whose capital Vientiane is just 24km away. The town is still a backwater, but has been developing fast since the construction of the huge Thai-Australian Friendship Bridge over the Mekong on the west side of town. As with most of the towns along this part of the Mekong, the thing to do in Nong Khai is just to take it easy, enjoying the peaceful settings of the guesthouses. The town stretches four kilometres along the south bank of the Mekong. Running from east to west, Thanon Meechai dominates activity: the main shops and businesses are plumb in the middle around the post office, with more frenetic commerce to the east at the Po Chai Day Market by the bus station, and to the west at the Chaiyaporn Night Market. To catch the best of life on the river, take the ninety-minute boat trip (B30), which sets out from the Ruenpae Haisoke floating restaurant at the top of Thanon Haisoke every evening at 5.30pm. At 1151 Soi Chitapanya, Thanon Prajak, Village Weaver Handicrafts (#786) sells mut mee cotton, silk and axe pillows.
