NAKHON PHANOM , 313km from Nong Khai, is chiefly of interest for access to Laos, via the town of Thakhek across the Mekong River. The ferry pier is at the northern end of the riverside promenade, opposite the market: boats to Thakhek go daily (every 30min; 8.30-11am & 1-3pm; B50), but you need to have a visa already . From Thakhek it's a two-hour bus ride to Savannakhet. There's a TAT office close to the ferry pier in Nakhon Phanom at 184/1 Thanon Sunthon Vichit, corner of Thanon Salaklang (tel 042/513490-1). Buses from Ubon Ratchathani, Mukdahan, Khon Kaen and Nong Khai arrive at the bus terminal about half a kilometre west of the centre. The best place to stay is Grand Hotel, at 210 Thanon Sri Thep (tel 042/511526; under $10), a block back from the river just south of the passenger ferry and market. You can check your email at Jnet Cybercafe, on Thanon Sri Thep, next to the clock tower.
