LOEI is really only useful as a transport hub. Buses run here from Udon Thani and Khon Kaen every thirty minutes, from Phitsanulok seven times a day and from Bangkok seventeen times a day, while half-hourly songthaews link the town to Chiang Khan (1hr). They all use the bus terminal on Highway 201, the main north-south road, about 2.5km south of the centre. The best place to stay is Friendship House (tel 042/832408; under $5), 257/41 Soi 15, Thanon Charoenrat, just behind and to the north of Wat Sri Boonruang and close to the bus station. The owner can guide you round Phu Kradung and rents bikes and motorbikes. The central night market is on the east side of Thanon Charoenrat.
