KHORAT , 90km from Pak Chong (officially renamed Nakhon Ratchasima), has nothing of interest in itself but can be used as a base for exploring Phimai and Phanom Rung. If you're looking for something to do here, check out the unexceptional Maha Veeravong Museum (Wed-Sun 9am-4pm; B10) in the grounds of Wat Suthachinda on Thanon Ratchadamnoen, or take a bus from Khorat's southern city gate to the interesting little pottery village of DAN KWIAN , 15km south of Khorat on Route 224. There are two long-distance bus terminals in Khorat, each supposedly serving specific destinations, but there are changes afoot, so check departure points with TAT. Essentially, Bus Terminal 1, which is just off Thanon Suranari, close to the town centre and most hotels, serves the nearest destinations such as Phimai and Pak Chong (for Khao Yai); it also runs some buses to Bangkok. Bus Terminal 2, on the northern edge of the city on Highway 2, is much larger, and is used mainly by the long-distance buses, from Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Surin, Khon Kaen, Nong Khai and Pattaya. Arriving at the train station on Thanon Mukkhamontri, you're midway between the commercial centre to the east (1km) and the TAT office to the west (1km). Local buses and songthaews travel most of the main roads: yellow #1 heads west along Thanon Chumphon, past the train station and out to Doctor's Guesthouse and returns east via Thanon Yommarat; #2 runs between the main TAT office in the west, via the train station, and Suranari and Assadang roads, to the east; and #3 also runs right across the city, via Mahathai and Jomsurangyat roads, past the train station, to the TAT office in the west. TAT (daily 8.30am-4.30pm; tel 044/213666), on the western edge of town, has free city bus maps. The best budget accommodation in Khorat is the clean, friendly and central Tokyo Hotel l, at 329-333 Thanon Suranari, just 30m from Bus Terminal 1 (tel 044/242873; under $10). If that's full, the nearby Tokyo Guesthouse and Tokyo Hotel 2 are similar. Siri Hotel, 167-168 Thanon Pho Klang (tel 044/242831; under $15), is also fairly central, quite quiet and spacious. The long-standing backpackers' favourite, Doctor's Guesthouse is ten minutes' bus ride out at 78 Soi 4, Thanon Suebsiri, near TAT (tel 044/255846; under $5). It has a quaint B&B atmosphere with only six rooms and a dorm. Local yellow bus/songthaew #1 stops opposite the soi entrance; #2 passes the Thanon Suebsiri junction (get off when you see Wat Mai Amphawan across the road). Khorat's small night market, along the Chomsurang Hotel end of Thanon Mahathai, is the best place for local northeastern food , or there are plenty of roadside noodle stalls opposite the train station. If you're staying at Doctor's Guesthouse, try the quality Thai dishes at C&C, next to the Soi 4 intersection on Thanon Suebsiri.
