Tours and Night Safaris
The good thing about joining a tour of Khao Yai is that you're accompanied by an expert wildlife-spotter, and you have transport between the major sights of the park. There are currently two backpacker-oriented tours running out of Pak Chong, both of which last for a day and a half, with the middle night spent in Pak Chong; book ahead if you can. Tours with Jungle Adventure (tel 044/313836), which is based at Soi 1, Thanon Kongvaccine, off Tesaban Soi 16 in central Pak Chong, cost B950 per person and include several hours' trail-walking, plus swimming at the waterfalls and a night safari; you spend the night at the Jungle Adventure lodgings ($5-10) in Pak Chong, in either a B70 dorm bed or a basic double room. Some travellers have criticized Jungle Adventure, however, for cutting too many corners, and at the time of writing, it seemed uncertain whether the company would have its guide licence renewed. (Happy Tours, opposite the train station, is run by the same company.) Wildlife Safari (tel 044/312922) tours, costing B850 per person, emphasize plant-spotting and animal observation in small groups, and include a night safari. Accommodation is at the Wildlife Safari huts (under $10), behind their office at 39 Thanon Pak Chong Subsanun, Nong Kaja, about 2km north of Pak Chong train station; call for free transport from Pak Chong. A much touted park attraction are the hour-long night safaris ("night lightings") which take truckloads of tourists round Khao Yai's main roads in the hope of sighting deer and civets, or even elephants and tigers. Both tours include a night safari, but if you're on your own, book a place on one of the trucks at the national park headquarters; they leave from there every night at 7pm and 8pm.
