Transport east from Ubon to Kong Chiam, Chong Mek and the Lao border involves a rather convoluted journey via Warinchamrab and the town of Phibun Mangsahan (known locally as Phibun). From Ubon, take city bus #1, #3 or #6 across the river to Warinchamrab bus station, and then change onto a local bus bound for Phibun (every 10min until 4.30pm). These terminate in Phibun's town centre from where it's a ten-minute walk through town to the songthaew stop beside the Kaeng Saphue bridge - the departure point for all public transport to Kong Chiam, Chong Mek and the Lao border. If travelling across to Laos via Chong Mek you should go to Phibun's Immigration Office ( kaan khao muang; tel 045/441108) first to get an exit stamp.
