The most popular day-trip out of Nan is to the village temple of Wat Nong Bua , 43km to the north. If you're on a bike, ride 40km up Highway 1080 to the southern outskirts of the town of Tha Wang Pha, where signs point to Wat Nong Bua, 3km away; buses and songthaews from Nan's Thanon Anantaworarichides go to Tha Wang Pha (hourly; 1hr), then take a motorbike taxi, or walk the last 3km. The wat's beautifully gnarled viharn was built in 1862 in typical Lanna style, with low, drooping roof tiers, but its most outstanding features are the remarkably intact late nineteenth-century murals which depict, with much humour and vivid detail, scenes from the Chanthakhat Jataka, the story of one of the Buddha's previous incarnations, as a hero called Chanthakhat.
