Set in wild countryside, 3km east of the Thai Yai/Kuomintang village of MAE SUYA (which is 40km from Mae Hong Son), Wilderness Lodge (under $5) is a great place to base yourself for hikes through the mountains to hilltribe villages. It's also within easy reach of two quite significant caves, the 1600-metre-long Tham Nam Pha Daeng, and the dramatic Tham Nam Lang, one of the biggest caves in the world, which has a towering entrance chamber and a spectacular nine-kilometre caving route beyond. To get to Wilderness Lodge take the left turning by the police box 3km east of Mae Suya, then continue on a dirt road for 1km. Another remote guesthouse lies near MAE LANA , a Thai Yai village 6km north of Highway 1095, reached by a dirt road which branches off to the left 56km from Mae Hong Son. The clean and cosy Mae Lana Guesthouse (under $5) is by a stream on the edge of the village, from where you can walk to several Lahu villages, as well as the Tham Mae Lana, with its white-water flows and phallic formations. You can also walk to Ban Tum along an easy-to-follow five-hour track.
