The Elephant Conservation Centre (shows daily 10am & 11am plus Sat & Sun 1.30pm; B50; tel 054/227051), 37km northwest of Lampang on Highway 11, is the most authentic place to see elephants being trained for forest work; it also cares for abandoned and abused elephants in its elephant hospital. An interpretive centre has exhibits on the history of the elephant in Thailand, elephant rides (B100-200) are available, and daily shows put the elephants through their paces. It's best visited en route from Chiang Mai to Lampang: ask the bus conductor for Suan Pa (Forest Park) Thung Kwian, 70km from Chiang Mai. It's a two-kilometre walk from the gates to the centre. The centre closes during the dry season from March to May and for every religious holiday, so check with TAT first.
